I will breathe life into the dead.
Laura and I went to London to visit my Sister-in-law and brother, but we were really there to see Bentley T. Dog, their new Chi-hua-hua/Poodle puppy.
While we were cooing over the puppy, I thought it would be a good time to upgrade their MacBook to Leopard. I was stopped dead in my tracks when the Installer wouldn’t recognize their hard drive as a viable installation location.
I ran Disk Utility and it reported back saying the b-tree was corrupt and “Invalid index key.” I booted into single user mode and ran a fsck -fy which said the same thing. Hmm. A few Google searches later revealed the answer was Disk Warrior. So I grabbed a copy, booted the MacBook from the Disk Warrior CD and sure enough it told me the directory structure was junk. I choose the “rebuild your busted-ass drive” option and the MacBook sprung back to life.
All is well that ends well.

The threat of losing my computer and all the junk on it was definitely a little stressful, but could I have appreciated the dizzying high of a fixed computer without first feeling the terrifying low of an invalid index key? Certainly not.
Such is true for life in general.
