new life?
I can’t remember whether or not I’ve written about the latest going-ons in my life over the past couple of months, but a lot has been happening. So, to my future descendants who will undoubtedly be reading this in an attempt at discovering exactly how the sprawling Chung Empire came to be, from its humble early 21st century beginnings (an empire built only from the pluck of one young man with nothing more than a sparkle in his eye and a spring in his step), here’s what’s been going down.
New job – I’ve been working for about a month and a half now, but this company isn’t anything like the ones I have worked for in the past. Things appear to move here “at the speed of business” (as they say on TV), which sounds incredibly lame, but I’ve come to learn that just means that everyone has a shit-ton of work to do all the time and there are millions of dollars changing hands and people never pack lunches and talk really quickly and there stock options and company branded luggage and business strategy and inside sales and directors and managers and VPs and Ps and MBOs and I don’t even know what half of that means, really.
And there’s a new office, as of this week. A giant office space with swipe cards with your goofy picture on the front and corner offices and mesh-back office chairs. I think it’s safe to declare that you’re officially on the corporate ladder when you’re cradling your ass in fake Herman Miller. Whether you’re climbing that ladder, falling off, or hanging on for dear life, well, I guess that’s another matter.

New apartment – I’ve officially moved downtown. I’ve got a window that over looks Queen St., laminate flooring, a huge rent bill and artistic neighbors. Overall, not too shabby. The weird thing is, at least so far, people seem a lot friendlier and the sense of community seems a lot stronger. Are these qualities that the suburbs were supposed to foster? Well let me tell you, I’ve spent a decent chunk of my life in Scarborough and it’s the complete opposite. I often wondered if people I walked by in Scarborough would spit on me if I caught fire. Probably not.Side note: My place is smaller than the apartment I had in London (Ontario), and I’m paying more in rent, but at least it’s not like this. And my washroom isn’t like this.
