I will be attending ScalaLiftOff on Saturday May 10th, 2008 from 9am to 5pm.
What’s ScalaLiftOff?
The Scala lift off is a great place for members of the Scala and lift communities to get together, learn about Scala, learn about lift and get to know each other face to face. There will be Scala tracks going all day long and lift tracks to suits everyones interests.
I spent the weekend in London (Ontario), the city I called home for the past 6 or 7 years prior to the last couple of months. I’ve spent so much time lately dealing with the (mild) culture shock of moving to Toronto that it was weird to have it in reverse. “Oh yeah, London is like this,” I kept telling myself.
Compared to Toronto, people in London move slowly. They walk slowly, they drive slowly. And if you, like me, have gotten used to the idea that if you aren’t constantly hurrying someone behind you will get upset, walking or driving behind these dawdlers is absolutely infuriating. It does give you some time to turn your head and notice that it’s an incredible day, though.
London has a lot of space. The parking lots for gas stations are 3 times larger than the gas station itself. People have giant lawns. There are places for kids to play, and you can find legal street parking pretty much anywhere!
If you go somewhere in London, you will see people you know. I walked into a recently-opened bar and within about 5 minutes, saw about five or six people I knew. Makes you feel kind of celebrity-like. After the bar while walking up the street, we ran into another three fellows we once used to drink with. Someone handed me two slices of pizza. I dropped one on the ground.
There are gay parties in London. Ok, maybe this isn’t a London-specific thing, but prior to the bar, we stopped in at some hairdresser-dude’s birthday party. Pretty sure I was the only straight guy there. There were about 15 or so people, all dancing to Salt N’Peppa’s “Shoop”. Half were gay guys, the other half were really leggy models wearing unbelievably small dresses. I think I should make some gay friends.
