PS3, the super expensive casual game machine.

I’ve finally had to face facts, I’m a casual gamer. There I said it. No longer do I have the time to grind through an RPG or complete 100% of any other game.

I’d like to call myself a hardcore casual gamer though, if I’m going to sit down for 15-30 minutes I’d like to play a game that is hard enough to be challenging.

Did you ever know someone that had a NeoGeo? They were like a million dollars or something.

Speaking of poorly selling game consoles…do I remember you once telling me that you had Turbo Graffix 16? Nothing says hot gaming action like Keith Courage and Bonk’s Adventure.

    • Tyler Weir 9:47 am on January 29, 2008 Permalink

I never knew anyone that had a Neo-Geo. Not even the kid that cried diamonds.

I did have a TurboGrafx-16 and it was amazing. Dragon Spirit and Ninja Spirit were amazing.

Cried diamonds? Is that anything like kidney stones?

    • Tyler Weir 9:58 am on January 29, 2008 Permalink

Ya, but way more valuable. It looked like it hurt, but that might have been due to me punching him so he would cry.

    Mario Kart Wii

Here’s some footage of Mario Kart Wii.

I’m officially an old-man, casual gamer. I don’t have the time or desire to work through an 80 hour RPG or grind through a game like Devil May Cry.

Games like Mario Kart Wii are perfect for me, sit down for 15 minutes and run a few tracks, done and done. Almost everything on the DS is a good fit as well. 15 minutes here and there, that’s all I can afford.

I’m amazed at the people that can fit World of Warcraft into their lives, there is no way I could manage dedicating that amount of time to a game.

    Gabe Newell on Mac gaming.

well, we have this pattern with Apple, where we meet with them, people there go “wow, gaming is incredibly important, we should do something with gaming”. And then we’ll say, “OK, here are three things you could do to make that better”, and then they say OK, and then we never see them again.

Interview link with Gabe Newell, head of Valve.

I really wish Valve would release their games on the Mac. I don’t like having to boot into Windows just to play Half-Life 2.

Super Metroid is on the Virtual console today.

This will be the first game I buy for the Virtual Console.

    Starcraft 2 is coming.

In honour of the Starcraft 2 announcement, I dug out my copy of Starcraft and started again.

I don’t remember my build order.

Remember when Hubs used to play that and consider any mission when he lost a guy a failure? Hey, this is updating as I type. That’s pretty neat. It just makes me want to type more and more. Wow, look at it go.

    • Tyler Weir 7:27 am on May 22, 2007 Permalink

Ya, it made it really hard to play that way. I also remember being a back seat general when you were playing. That had to be annoying. But I couldn’t play, I’d get sucked in and fail out of school.

Didn’t they have a trailer for at the end of Warcraft 3 that back when we lived on Main? I was so excited about it then. Who am I kidding? I’m just as excited now!!!

I remember Hoss was ridiculously addicted to Warcraft 2. I used to play him all the time…I would look at my watch at like 10 AM when I started, then all of a sudden it would be like 9:00.

Visual Studio on Parallels / Red Steel.

After installing Parallels on my MacBook Pro I installed Visual Studio C# Express to see how it would perform. Without any sort of metrics I’ll say that it seemed faster than my T60, notably compilation appeared to be much faster.

Laura rented Red Steel for the Wii. Um.. I burned through the first two levels and the entire time I was fighting with the controls. It’s not a bad game, in fact, it’s quite good for a launch title. I think that more time with the controller and more time on the cut scenes and this game would have been great. As it is, the control scheme knocked me out of the experience.

    Unlockable Trucks you say.

It appears that Excite Truck was made with me in mind. It offers unlockable trucks and paint jobs as you progress through the game. Now unlockable content is certainly not new, but Nintendo adds one vital bit of information that hooks me. They tell me that I only need three more races or two more wins to unlock a new truck. That simple addition keeps me playing for hours.

Scary thing is…after playing that game for a few (read: 5) hours, I hopped in the car for a short road trip and was overwhelmed with disappointment that our grand am doesn’t fly through the air like the Dominator. Stupid Grand Am

    • Tyler Weir 1:21 pm on December 7, 2006 Permalink

Wait, the Grand Am *shouldn’t* have fire coming out of it? We need to talk.
