Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs
There is a thread on Hacker News discussing a reading group focused on Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs.
There is a Google Group and a wiki up as well. Geez, Hacker News people move quickly.
I’m going to do my best to go through SICP and do the exercises in Scala.
When I was coming back to Functional Programming Steve Jenson told me to read SICP.I’ve put up a github repo for my code.
If you search for sicp on github, you get a bunch of repos from people with similar ideas.
Here’s a wiki with a bunch of SICP chapters in different languages.

Awesome book: Visual Aid
I picked up Visual Aid when I bought Laura one of her Xmas gifts.

It has a diagram per page that summarizes things like Hovercrafts:

And the comparative sizes of fictional characters, like Godzilla and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man:

So awesome!

Looking for a terrible Twitter idea?
Here’s one I call “Fakey Filtered Tweets:”
Setup:
- There exists a user: @some_topic
- I (@tylerweir) follow @some_topic
- @some_topic follows @tylerweir
If I send @some_topic a message, the robot that manages @some_topic retweets it, so everyone following @some_topic gets the message.
Here’s an example, for people that live in the concrete world:
For this example, @some_topic is actually @torontofc. Through my network of well placed sources (aka Google search) I know that Dwayne De Rosario has just signed for Toronto FC and I want to tell all the fans. I send a message like this:“@torontofc – DDR just signed for us, w00t!”
@torontofc then retweets it:
“RT: @tylerweir: DDR just signed for us, w00t!”
So people that follow @torontofc and not me, get Toronto FC news that I happen to know. They also avoid the garbage that I tweet on a regular basis.
How long until this turns into a spam-reflector? Probably about 4 minutes.

It’s a lot of fun. Old school haircuts, Poker hands, wood joinery.
Well worth the $12.

How do you hear about stuff like this? I like cool stuff; how come no one tells me?
